My Approach to Adult ADHD Counseling

If you’re wondering if you can learn to manage your symptoms of adult ADHD, it’s possible! Using ADHD therapy techniques gathered from years of experience, I have helped countless clients successfully navigate symptoms of ADHD. I’ve also learned to help myself through my own symptoms of ADHD.

I assist you in better understanding and resolving your emotions so that you feel a greater sense of calm and control. I help you understand how your brain works so that you can stay better organized and on top of the things that really matter.

Many years ago, I realized that my own lack of focus, disorganization, and feelings of general stress were causing sadness and frustration in my personal and work life. I was already practicing therapy at that time, and sometimes I felt like my personal struggles with lack of focus and inattention were getting in the way of me getting what I wanted in life. I sought help, which resulted in being diagnosed with ADHD as an adult and getting treatment.

It took time, support from my therapist, and trial and error for me to manage my own symptoms successfully and reach more of my personal goals. During my period of change, I was practicing therapy and doing research on what could help my symptoms and the symptoms of my clients.  As I utilized what I was learning through therapy and research, I began to feel more peace and calm when dealing with my symptoms. I also gained more knowledge to assist my clients and more empathy for the challenges my clients were experiencing. I am determined to help support my clients in their therapy journey so that they may relieve any emotional and mental pain they are experiencing and gain lives of greater clarity, peace and happiness.

Adult ADHD Counseling FAQs

What does undiagnosed ADHD look like in adults?

Before being diagnosed, people might deal with several different symptoms that don’t automatically make them think of ADHD. They include lack of focus and concentration, having difficulty finishing things that you start, problems making decisions, and general impulsivity and frustration. ADHD can also show up as emotional difficulties, irritability and difficulty managing frustration. Although these symptoms can be chronic and ongoing for adults with ADHD, there are ways to manage the symptoms if a person knows what to do.

Can adults get help for ADHD?

Yes, they can! There are several ways that adults can start getting help for ADHD. There are many books that can guide a person in the right direction in understanding symptoms and treatment options. Organizations that are specifically tailored for people that have ADHD, like CHADD, have many resources, including general information about ADHD and help finding support groups. Many people benefit from ADHD coaching or working with a therapist that specializes in ADHD to help with strategies in dealing with symptoms. Others find working with a doctor helpful in order to find relief of symptoms through medication management.

How do I get diagnosed with adult ADHD?

In order to get an official diagnosis, you would need an evaluation from a qualified mental health professional or doctor. You would then be guided through questions and assessments that would help you better understand whether or not you have ADHD.

How does ADHD therapy work with David Hunter?

I begin by getting initial information and giving you an assessment that helps understand your unique issues with ADHD. If you don’t already have an ADHD diagnosis, but supect you might have ADHD, I can take you through the diagnostic process to determine if you do have ADHD. We would also have a conversation about the goals you have for therapy, the strengths that you already have that would assist in accomplishing those goals, and then begin to look at techniques and strategies to help you achieve those goals. We also look at how to deal with any other issues that could be coming up in your life that might keep you from achieving and realizing those goals.
