My Approach to Teen Counseling

If you’re wondering if your teen can get the support they need, it’s possible! Using therapy techniques gathered from years of experience, I have helped countless teen clients successfully navigate their mental health.

From my years of experience working with adolescents, I’ve noticed the following:

  • Trouble with focusing in school and keeping homework complete may be resulting in your adolescent not living up to their full academic potential.

  • When your adolescent hyper-focuses on activities like video games and social media, this can cause problems with family and social connection, leaving your teen feeling lonely and isolated.

  • Your adolescent’s mood swings and inability to communicate can leave them and those around them feeling confused and frustrated.

  • I help your teen better understand the unique way that their brain works so that they can more easily complete short-term tasks and long-term goals.

  • I assist your teen and your family in learning ways to better understand each other through building better communication skills and giving you the tools to understand the developing adolescent brain.

  • I give your teen tools to navigate their emotions and thoughts so they can have more acceptance of who they are and have greater peace of mind.

Teen Counseling FAQs

How do I know if my teen needs therapy?

Recognizing whether your teen may benefit from therapy can be challenging, as adolescence is a tricky and transformative time. There are signs, however, that may determine whether your teen could benefit from professional support.

If you see a sudden change in mood with persistent and intense emotions, it’s always a good idea to check in with your child and assess what they need. Therapy could be helpful in addressing and managing any intense emotions they might be having.

If your teen is struggling academically, experiencing a drop in their grades, or showing a lack of motivation and concentration, therapy can help bring to light any underlying issues that may be affecting your child’s performance.

If your teen has trouble establishing or maintaining friendships, experiences strong feelings of loneliness or isolation, or has difficulty with social interactions, therapy can provide your teen with valuable skills and support.

Teens can also use support through therapy if they are involved in risky behaviors, have issues with self esteem, or have experienced unresolved trauma.

In certain situations your teen will come out and say they need therapy. Unfortunately, most of the time, it’s not that easy. It’s okay to trust your instincts. If you have.a feeling that your teen could benefit from therapy, it pays to have a consultation with a therapist.

What should I expect if my teen works with David?

Generally I have 2 separate consultations prior to agreeing to therapy with your teen: one with you and one with your child. This is to make sure that I’m the right fit for your teen. At the first session, I begin by getting initial information and ask questions to get to know your child. We would then have a conversation about the goals they have, the strengths that they already possess to accomplish those goals, and then begin to look at techniques and strategies to help them achieve those goals. We also look at how to deal with any other issues that could be coming up in their  life that might keep them from achieving and realizing those goals.

Sometimes the parent will be involved in therapy and sometimes they won’t. This will depend on the needs of your child. With many of the adolescents I work with, we can schedule a family session from time to time or I can speak periodically with the parent, so that they are aware of what is happening in therapy.
